Why is my cat suddenly mean?
A cat that has always been affectionate suddenly hissing, swatting, or biting is alarming β but this change almost always has an identifiable cause. Before assuming it is a personality problem, rule out pain and illness.
Pain is the most common overlooked cause
Cats are exceptional at hiding pain, but when touched in a painful area they react immediately. If your cat hisses or bites when you touch a specific area (lower back, belly, joints), pain is likely. Common pain sources:
- Arthritis β particularly in the lower back and hips; may be triggered by being picked up or petted along the spine
- Dental abscess or broken tooth β reacts when face is touched
- Urinary tract infection or blockage β reacts when belly is touched or when using the litter box
- Wounds β especially bite wounds from outdoor fights that may not be visible through fur
- Internal illness β many diseases cause generalised discomfort that makes cats irritable
See your vet first if aggression is new and unexplained.
Behavioural causes of sudden aggression
- Redirected aggression β your cat sees another cat through the window, becomes highly aroused, and turns and bites whoever is nearest. The person bitten is confused because there was no obvious trigger. Solution: prevent access to the window view.
- Petting-induced aggression β some cats have a low threshold for stimulation. They enjoy being stroked for a short time, then become overstimulated and bite. Warning signs just before: tail lashing, skin twitching, ears rotating back, pupils dilating. Learn your cat's threshold and stop before they reach it.
- Fear aggression β a change in the household (new person, baby, other pet, furniture rearrangement, building work) can cause a previously confident cat to become fearful and reactive.
- Inter-cat aggression β if you have multiple cats and a new conflict has developed, it may be status conflict or one cat is ill and smells different (cats respond aggressively to a returning cat that smells like the vet clinic).
- Social maturity β cats reach social maturity at 2β4 years. Previously tolerant cats may become less so as their personality settles.
What to do
Never punish an aggressive cat β it escalates fear and worsens aggression. Manage the environment to prevent situations that trigger it, then seek veterinary or behaviourist guidance.
See your vet within a few days for sudden unprovoked aggression in a previously gentle cat. If the cat has bitten someone deeply or the aggression is escalating rapidly, book urgently.
