Toxic Foods for Birds — Complete List

Birds are highly sensitive to many foods that humans and other pets consume safely. Avocado can cause fatal cardiac failure within 48 hours, and even a small amount of chocolate or caffeine can trigger fatal arrhythmias.

## Immediately Toxic — Seek Emergency Vet Care

Avocado (Persin Toxicity)
All parts of the avocado plant contain persin, which causes myocardial necrosis, respiratory distress, and death in birds. Even small amounts are dangerous. There is no antidote.

Chocolate and Caffeine
Theobromine and caffeine cause cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and death. Dark chocolate is most dangerous, but all forms are toxic. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and cola are equally hazardous.

Alcohol
Ethanol causes acute liver failure and neurological toxicity in birds at very low doses.

Xylitol (Artificial Sweetener)
Found in sugar-free gum, mints, and many processed foods. Causes hypoglycemia and liver failure.

## Moderately Toxic — Avoid Completely

Onions and Garlic: Contain thiosulphates that damage red blood cells, causing hemolytic anemia.

Apple Seeds and Stone Fruit Pits: Contain amygdalin, which metabolizes to hydrogen cyanide. Remove all seeds and pits before offering fruit.

Rhubarb: Leaves and stalks contain oxalic acid, causing kidney damage.

Raw Beans: Contain phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), a lectin that is toxic even in small amounts. Thoroughly cooked beans are safe.

## What to Do If Your Bird Has Eaten Something Toxic

Call an avian emergency vet immediately. Note the substance, quantity, and time of ingestion. Do not attempt to induce vomiting.
