Budgie diet guide: what and how much to feed
Budgerigars (budgies) are small parrots with big nutritional needs that go beyond the typical bowl of mixed seeds. A seed-only diet is the equivalent of feeding a child nothing but chips β it keeps them alive, but leads to nutritional deficiency and a shortened life.
The ideal budgie diet
1. Pellets (30β50% of diet)
High-quality pellets formulated for small parrots provide balanced nutrition that seed mixes cannot. Good brands: Zupreem Natural Small, Harrison''s Bird Foods Fine, Hagen Tropican. Transition from seeds to pellets slowly (mix in increasing proportions over 4β6 weeks).
2. Fresh vegetables (20β30% of diet)
Offer a variety daily. Safe options:
- Leafy greens: spinach, kale, rocket, parsley, basil, coriander
- Vegetables: carrot, red bell pepper, broccoli (small amounts), courgette, cucumber
- Corn on the cob (a favourite treat)
Avoid: avocado (toxic), onion, garlic, leek (toxic).
3. Seeds (20β30% of diet β not more)
Seeds should supplement, not dominate. Use as a treat, scatter-feed opportunity, or foraging reward. Millet spray is a high-calorie favourite β offer as an occasional treat, not daily.
4. Fresh fruit (5β10% of diet)
Offer sparingly due to sugar content: apple (remove seeds), pear, berries, melon. Avoid mango skin, avocado.
5. Water
Fresh water daily. Change even if the bowl looks clean β bacteria grow quickly. Use ceramic or stainless bowls rather than plastic. Some budgies prefer a small bird bath.
Feeding amounts
A budgie needs about 1.5β2 teaspoons of seeds or pellets per day, plus fresh food. Observe body condition β you should be able to feel the keel (breastbone) but not see it prominently; a sharp keel indicates underweight.
Foods that are toxic to budgies
Avocado, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol (artificial sweetener), onion and garlic family, fruit seeds and pits (apple, cherry, plum), rhubarb.
If your budgie has lost weight, has fluffy feathers, or is at the bottom of the cage, see an avian vet urgently. These signs indicate illness, not just a dietary problem.
