How to Tell If Your Bird Is in Pain

Flovvi Team

Birds are prey animals that instinctively mask pain and illness until they can no longer do so. In the wild, showing vulnerability invites predation β€” so birds suppress all outward signs of distress until the illness is advanced. By the time a bird shows obvious pain behaviours, it is frequently critically ill.

## Behavioural Signs of Pain in Birds

Fluffed Feathers While Awake
Birds fluff their feathers to conserve heat when they are cold or unwell. A bird that sits fluffed during the day, when the room temperature is normal, is using this thermal conservation response because illness is making it unable to maintain body temperature β€” a strong pain and illness signal.

Tail Bobbing at Rest
Rhythmic movement of the tail with each breath at rest indicates respiratory effort. The bird is using accessory muscles to breathe β€” a sign of pain, respiratory disease, or fluid in the air sacs.

Sleeping More Than Usual or Sleeping on the Floor
Birds sleep approximately 10–12 hours and nap briefly during the day. A bird sleeping most of the active daytime hours, or sleeping on the cage floor rather than a perch, is ill and potentially in pain.

Changes in Vocalisation
A bird in pain may become unusually quiet (reduced singing or talking), vocalise differently (new harsh calls), or suddenly scream when touched in a specific area. Sudden silence in a usually vocal bird is an important warning sign.

Aggression When Touched
A normally handleable bird that bites, screams, or recoils when touched in a specific area is indicating localised pain. Check the affected area for swelling, wounds, or unusual lumps.

Decreased Activity and Interaction
A bird that stops engaging with toys, does not fly within its cage, or shows no interest in its surroundings is experiencing significant discomfort. Birds are naturally curious and active.

## Physical Signs of Pain

Abnormal Posture
- Perching with weight shifted off one foot (foot or leg pain)
- Leaning to one side (inner ear condition, pain)
- Hunching with head tucked deeply (severe illness or abdominal pain)

Changes in Droppings
Pain and systemic illness invariably affect digestion. Watery droppings, very green or yellow urates, or droppings that are much smaller than normal all indicate a sick bird.

Bleeding or Visible Wounds
Blood feathers (pin feathers) that are broken bleed heavily and are painful. Any active bleeding in a bird requires prompt attention.

## What to Do

Contact an avian vet the same day. Birds deteriorate rapidly once they show pain signs β€” a "wait and see" approach is dangerous. Keep the bird warm during any period of observation.

When to see a vet

Contact an avian vet the same day if your bird is on the cage floor, showing tail bobbing, not eating, has visible bleeding, or has become unusually quiet. Do not wait overnight.
