Bird quarantine: introducing a new bird safely
Bringing a new bird into a home with existing birds is one of the highest-risk moments for disease transmission in aviculture. A bird that appears completely healthy can be incubating infectious disease. Quarantine is not optional β it is the standard of care.
Why quarantine is essential
Many serious bird diseases have incubation periods of days to weeks. A newly purchased bird can carry:
- Psittacosis (Chlamydiosis) β a bacterial infection transmissible to humans; legal reporting requirement in many countries
- PBFD (Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease) β highly contagious viral disease; no cure
- Avian Bornavirus / PDD β transmission not fully understood; quarantine reduces risk
- Aspergillosis β airborne fungal spores can spread to immunocompromised birds in the same airspace
- Psittacine paramyxovirus, Polyomavirus, Herpesvirus
- Bacterial infections (Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, Pasteurella)
- Parasites (Giardia, air sac mites, red mites)
The minimum quarantine protocol
- Minimum 30 days, ideally 45β60 days
- Separate room: genuinely separate, with the door kept closed. Airborne diseases (Aspergillosis, Psittacosis) travel on air currents β being in the same room without direct contact is not sufficient quarantine.
- Separate equipment: dedicated food and water bowls, perches, and toys β never shared, even if cleaned
- Separate handling: wash hands thoroughly before and after contact with the new bird and before approaching existing birds
- Separate clothing if possible: changing a layer before handling existing birds eliminates feather dander transfer
Veterinary health screening
During quarantine, arrange a health check with an avian vet that includes:
- Full physical examination
- Chlamydiosis (Psittacosis) test β PCR or antigen test on faeces
- PBFD test β blood and feather samples
- Faecal parasite examination
- Avian Bornavirus screening if relevant to species
- Blood panel if the bird's history is unknown
After quarantine
Even after quarantine, first introductions between birds should be gradual:
1. Side-by-side cage placement, several feet apart (sight and sound only)
2. Moving cages closer over several weeks
3. Shared airspace in a neutral room before shared cage space
4. Supervised shared time before unsupervised
Some birds never safely cohabit even after all protocols are followed β personality and species compatibility matter.
If your new bird develops any symptoms during quarantine β changes in droppings, lethargy, breathing changes, or weight loss β see an avian vet before the quarantine period ends. Do not introduce a symptomatic bird to existing birds under any circumstances.
