What does my rabbit's urine color mean — when is red urine an emergency?

Rabbit urine normally ranges from pale yellow to deep orange or reddish-brown due to plant pigments — but true red urine from blood (hematuria) looks different and is always a reason to see a vet.

Rabbit urine is one of the most misunderstood health signs in exotic pet medicine. Owners frequently panic at normal orange urine, yet miss genuine hematuria that needs investigation.

The normal color spectrum
- Pale yellow: well-hydrated rabbit on a balanced diet
- Deep yellow to amber: normal, slightly more concentrated
- Orange to reddish-orange: very common after eating certain vegetables (dandelion, certain hay types) or in cold weather — completely normal
- Brown-red ("rusty"): normal in many rabbits, especially after plant pigment intake

Pigmenturia vs. hematuria — how to tell them apart at home
Place urine on a white paper towel. Pigmented urine leaves a uniform orange-red stain that does not separate into a clear outer ring and dark center. Blood leaves a darker center with a paler outer halo, and may contain visible clots or stringy material.

Cloudy white urine
Calcium is excreted primarily through urine in rabbits (unlike most mammals). Milky-white or chalky urine is normal when intermittent. Consistently thick, sludge-like white urine ("bladder sludge") indicates excess dietary calcium and predisposes to bladder stones — reduce calcium-rich greens (kale, spinach) and increase water intake.

Dark brown urine
If distinctly dark brown (not reddish-brown) and accompanied by lethargy and reduced appetite, liver disease or severe dehydration is possible — see a vet.

Urine frequency and volume
Normal rabbits urinate 150–250 ml/day in multiple episodes. Straining to urinate, crying during urination, or no urination for 12+ hours requires same-day veterinary care.
