Egg Binding in Birds β€” Symptoms & Emergency Treatment

Flovvi Team

Egg binding is a true veterinary emergency. A retained egg can rupture internally, cause paralysis by compressing the sciatic nerve, or lead to fatal septicemia within hours. Any female bird straining, sitting on the cage floor, or tail-pumping must be seen by a vet immediately.

## What Is Egg Binding?

Egg binding (dystocia) occurs when a formed egg cannot pass through the reproductive tract and be expelled normally. It is one of the most common reproductive emergencies in female pet birds.

## Species Most Commonly Affected

Budgerigars, cockatiels, canaries, lovebirds, and finches are at highest risk due to their tendency toward chronic egg laying. Large parrots can also be affected.

## Signs and Symptoms

Straining and Tail Pumping
Rhythmic straining or tail pumping without producing an egg is the hallmark sign. The bird appears to be attempting to defecate but cannot.

Sitting on Cage Floor
A bird that abandons its perch and sits on the floor is often too weak or uncomfortable to maintain its normal posture.

Abdominal Distension
A swollen, firm lower abdomen may be visible or palpable.

Leg Weakness or Paralysis
A large egg can compress the sciatic nerve, causing sudden leg weakness or complete leg paralysis on one or both sides.

## Risk Factors

Calcium Deficiency: Insufficient calcium causes weak uterine contractions and soft-shelled eggs that are difficult to pass.
Obesity: Excess body fat reduces the space available for egg passage.
Chronic Egg Laying: Repeated egg laying depletes calcium reserves and weakens the reproductive tract.

## Emergency First Aid: Heat and Humidity

While transporting to a vet, keep the bird warm and humid (place a damp cloth in the carrier, maintain 30Β°C / 86Β°F). Do not attempt to manually remove the egg.

When to see a vet

Egg binding is a same-day emergency. If your bird has been straining for more than 30 minutes or shows leg weakness, go to an emergency avian vet immediately β€” do not attempt to manually remove the egg.
